Why I Can't Stop Teaching Music

I remember the first time a couple approached me about teaching their daughters music. One wanted to play piano and the other, the violin. I was fifteen at the time, a total novice myself, and up for the challenge.

Rain is streaking my window, and I love it. Spring finally graced the Midwest with its presence this week and the burst of fresh air tinted in green sprouts and melting snow as it gurgles in little creeks out in the pasture makes me ready for new things and fresh starts.

The farm is teeming with lambs and pretty soon hundreds of fluffy chicks are going to arrive at the post office. We've been boarding a sweet little filly at our place and watching her goof off with my other horses was the highlight of my morning. Besides that, this summer is gearing up to be crazy. Along with the usual farm work and haying season, I'll be juggling two jobs (actually...make that three. Thankfully two are seasonal) and trying to keep up with all the fun on weekends.

I've also been exploring ways to expand on my writing a little. Monetizing an art form is never easy. :/

BUT GUESS WHAT?!?!
My historical novel is once again a SEMI-FINALST in the Genesis contest!

The night I found out, a short story had been burning inside of me for days and finally spilled over. Two hours and four thousand words later, I had the bare bones of my idea and that incredible thrill of having just discovered something beautiful.

I emerged from my bedroom to find two missed calls.

Getting the call that I am a semi-finalist sent me over the moon. I woke up the next morning to a sunny spring day and all the world before me. Sometimes I wonder if I lose sleep and sanity and cry buckets of tears over my writing just for moments like this.

(Yes, writers are dramatic. If you hadn't already guessed.)

Now that I'm coming down off of my high (and today is my day off!) I think I'll go snap on my fairy lights and snuggle up with a novel. My favorite on a rainy day is usually something nostalgic...like Little Women or My Friend Flicka.

How about you? Do you enjoy rainy days? What are you looking forward to this summer? Drop a comment below and let's chat!
